The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum offers weekly summer day camp
programs from mid-June through July each year. We offer a variety of
camps that feature hands-on learning. Themes include maritime history,
archaeology, technology, nature, and science. All camps feature hands-on
educational activities, crafts, and indoor and outdoor games. Campers
will enjoy a field trip aboard the Schooner Freedom.

Grades 1 and 2
YOUNG EXPLORERS
June 16-20 and July 7-11 Many naturalists and explorers came to Florida in the 1800s. How did they
find their way in a strange, new place? What new people, plants and animals
did they find? How did they adapt to the climate, the bugs, the unfamiliar
food, flora and fauna? Try your hand at mapping, navigating and exploring.
Explore nature, creativity, science and fun 19th century way. Set sail for
fun on the Schooner Freedom!
LIGHTHOUSE LIFE
June 23- 27 and July 14-18) Living at a lighthouse was hard work but it was a lot of fun, too! Find out
what lighthouse children did for work and recreation. Build sandcastles,
explore nature, play games! Learn about lighthouses; why we need them and
how they work. Learn about arts & crafts, boats and boating and being a kid
before TV and video games. Create and produce a radio play about the
lighthouse to share with your friends. Board the Victory III for a fabulous
view of the lighthouse from the water!
HOW DID THEY DO THAT?
July 21-25 Before electricity and modern inventions, how did theyÉLight the house? Cook?
Stay cool? Travel? Have fun? What games, stories, songs and crafts were
popular? Explore nature, learn about the science of light and sound, and
floating and flying. Board the Victory III for a fabulous view of the
lighthouse from the water!
OVER & UNDER THE SEA
July 28- August 1 What's under the water? Learn about the sea and beach life around us. Why
did old-time sailors need lighthouses? What did they do for fun during those
long voyages? Learn about the nature of water with hands-on science and
crafts. Be an archaeologist, a sailor, a castaway. Set sail for fun on the
Schooner Freedom!
Grades 3 and 4
A NEW WORLD
June 16-20 and July 7-11 How would you like to leave your home and sail to a new world? What would
you bring? How would you get what you needed? Who would you meet? What work
would you do? Step back in time to explore the stories, songs, crafts, games
and daily life of the people who came from across the sea to build St.
Augustine. Set sail for fun on the Schooner Freedom!
BUILDERS AND BOATERS
June 23- 27 and July 14-18 How do boats float? How do they move? Learn about sinking, floating and
sailing. Visit our shipwrights and see how they build boats, then take a ride.
Explore the science and physics of sailing though hands-on art, crafts, games,
model making and fun. Build, decorate and test your own model steamboat.

Grades 3 through 6
HISTORY TECH
July 21-25 Explore the technology of boats from Sail to Steam. Try your hand at pottery,
cooking and navigating the "primitive" way. Learn about the art and science of
19th century living with hands-on experiments, crafts and more! Board the Victory
III for a fabulous view of the lighthouse from the water!
EXPLORERS OVER & UNDER THE SEA
July 28- August 1 Ponce de Leon, Menendez, Bartram & others - how did they find their way? Go back
in time and learn about ships, sextants, sailing and surviving in a strange new
place through the eyes of a 19th century explorer! Set sail for fun on the
Schooner Freedom! |
