The
Lighthouse Today
The
St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum is open to the public
seven days a week. Visitors can climb 219 stairs to
the top of the tower and learn about the lives of the
keepers and their families in the museum. Completely
automated, the lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation.
The
light station is constantly growing. A new Visitors'
Center was opened in October 2000 to give guests an
orientation to the site and to help reduce the impact
of thousands of visitors on the historic keepers' house.
The Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP)
has brought the study of shipwrecks to the lighthouse.
New programs and exhibits continue to demonstrate the
keeperšs way of life.
The
St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum is a not-for-profit
institution. Many of our programs have been made possible
through donations and grant programs such as Floridašs
Historical Museums Grants-in-Aid Program and through
organizations such as the National Endowment for the
Humanities. Foundations such as the Publix Supermarket
Charities have also helped us provide quality exhibits
for our visitors.
