Founding Lights was established as a leadership society with the mission to ensure the continued preservation of the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Since the Junior Service League of St. Augustine, Inc. completed the initial restoration in 1994, the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in capital restoration projects and in preservation maintenance on the keepersí house, tower, and lens. The Founding Lights Campaign will help fund an endowment that will preserve and protect this legacy for generations to come. Fifty percent of your pledge will become a part of the endowment, while the remaining funds will be used for the immediate and ongoing restoration maintenance of the St. Augustine Light Station.

The Foundation

In 1980, the Junior Service League of St. Augustine took on the daunting project of restoring the lightkeepersí house. This project ultimately expanded to include the lighthouse tower-a $1.2 million dollar investment in St. Augustineís heritage.

Fifteen women, who refused to believe "it couldnít be done," provided the foundation for the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum. In the years that have passed the museum and its programs have grown. These beautiful buildings have come to life with exhibits, research and educational programs that engage and enlighten our visitors.

The Legacy

The legacy of the initial restoration 25 years ago lives on. But without our support it could become fragile. We can not be complacent and count on others to protect it. Each of us has an obligation to protect this symbol of our heritage.

The Commitment

The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum accepted ownership of the tower from the U.S. Coast Guard. We are committed to preserving this legacy and creating a foundation that will protect it for generations to come.

The Founding Lights Society has been established for this purpose. Fifty percent of your gift will become part of an endowment to protect these symbols of our maritime heritage forever. The remaining funds will be used for immediate and on-going restoration maintenance of the tower.

With your pledge of $1,000 for five years, you can take a leading role in insuring the preservation of our legacy.
